  Mutual respect and assumption of good intentions. (i.e trust) If they lash out every time they feel insulted, it just gets tiresome to correct after a while and if you do not respect each other, then any feedback you give or receive will be worthless. IMO Friends should push me as I push them to be better people. For me, at least the definition of a good person should somewhat align. That is the very core of what I expect from my friendships.
